Hiring a pest control company for bed bugs can easily run into thousands of Hong Kong dollars — beyond what many families can afford. But leaving an infestation untreated only makes it worse. Hong Kong does have volunteer groups and charitable funds offering free or subsidised bed bug help. Here’s the full list, with phone numbers.
Build & Wish / Footprint Volunteer Teams: free home extermination
- Phone / WhatsApp: 9609 0399 (contact: volunteer Ms Koo / Jan)
- Who it’s for: disadvantaged families with serious infestations (bed bugs / “wood bugs”)
- What they do: volunteers carry out free in-home bed bug extermination. According to their YouTube channel, they treated over 100 severely infested disadvantaged households between 2018 and mid-2019, claiming zero recurrence.
- ⚠️ Note: public information only goes up to mid-2019, and it is unverified whether they are still operating. Please WhatsApp them first to confirm.
Ip Chi Shing Charitable Foundation: subsidies for hiring pest controllers
- Phone: 2881-6767 (address: 27/F, Fortis Tower, 77–79 Gloucester Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong)
- Who it’s for: low-income families (income at or below 50% of the median household income) or elderly aged 65+ in financial difficulty; must have been a Hong Kong resident for at least one year
- What they do: subsidises hiring a professional pest control company for bed bug treatment — about HK$3,000 per flat, capped at HK$10,000 per person in total. Note: volunteers do not come themselves; the fund pays for you to hire a company. Applications must go through a registered social worker’s referral and assessment.
- ⚠️ Note: the application guide was last revised in January 2021 and details may have changed. Please call to confirm before applying.
Government routes: FEHD and the Housing Department
- Food and Environmental Hygiene Department — 2868 0000: provides prevention information and advice only. It will not send anyone to your home. The FEHD states plainly that households with bed bugs should “engage a private pest control company for professional bed bug control services.”
- Housing Department — no bed bug hotline: public housing tenants should contact their estate office. Staff will visit to assess the situation, explain control methods and hand out leaflets; elderly or special-needs tenants may get discretionary help on a case-by-case basis, and those in financial difficulty can be referred to Social Welfare or NGOs. But the Department states it generally will not handle bed bug problems inside tenants’ flats.
