Cardiff’s “Worst in 38 Years” Bed Bug Infestation: Hundreds of Thousands Found, Bed Frames Incinerated

Britain’s bed bug problem has produced another shocking case: Gareth Davies, owner of Cardiff-based Pest & Property Solutions Ltd, was called to a home in the Canton area of Cardiff in early October, where lifting the mattress revealed hundreds of thousands of bed bugs — with more behind the wallpaper. He described it as the worst infestation he had seen in his 38-year career.

The moment the mattress was lifted

  • According to UK media reports on 8 October, Davies arrived in head-to-toe protective gear and found hundreds of thousands of bed bugs crawling around the home.
  • He filmed the job in two clips shared to Instagram: the first shows the moment the mattress is lifted; the second shows him peeling back wallpaper to reveal hundreds more bugs — proof that bed bugs don’t stay in the mattress, spreading into walls and behind wall coverings when numbers get this bad.
  • Speaking to BBC Radio Wales Breakfast, he said: “This house was just horrific. Hundreds of thousands of them when you lifted the mattresses up. They were coming out of the wallpaper, it was horrendous.”
  • His team had reportedly tackled a large cockroach outbreak the previous month, which he had likened to a horror movie — yet this bed bug case was worse.

How it was dealt with: vacuum, spray, incinerate

  • The team first used specialist vacuum cleaners to remove as many bugs as possible — “to take as many bed bugs as we can out of the equation.”
  • The property was then treated with a specialist insecticide.
  • The mattresses and bed frames were bagged up and incinerated — the infestation was too severe to save them.
  • Davies urged homeowners not to wait until it reaches this point: “When numbers get this bad, they can spread into cracks, skirting boards, furniture, electrical fittings and even behind wall coverings. What you can see may only be a fraction of what’s actually hiding.”
  • “Bed bugs are experts at disappearing into the smallest spaces — which is why simply spraying what you can see isn’t enough,” he warned. His advice: “As soon as you see them you need to act” — bites and blood spotting on sheets are the tell-tale signs.
  • According to the UK’s NHS, bed bugs can enter homes on clothes, luggage, or second-hand furniture, hiding in mattresses and walls.

Why Hongkongers should care

The UK’s bed bug problem keeps escalating: July reports already showed cases up 40% year-on-year in parts of London (see our earlier report, London Bed Bug Cases Surge), and now Cardiff has produced a career-worst case. With university terms and Christmas sending large numbers of Hongkongers to the UK, bed bugs love nothing more than hitching a ride home in luggage.

Read the travel/hotel bed bug checklist before you go, and inspect your luggage plus heat-treat your clothes on return. If you do bring them home, How to Treat Bed Bugs Yourself: Correct Steps (Hong Kong) has the full process.
